50 Ways of Saying Fabulous

Standard

A rather quaint Kiwi film about 12 year old Billy coming of age and coming to terms with his sexuality in rural Otago in the 70’s.  Blending fantasy and fiction, we see Billy as an overweight wimp with his own niche in the local society but also treated badly by the other boys, his friendship with ultra tomboy Harriet, his yearning for new hunky farmhand Jamie and his encounters with Roy, aka The Freak, who is a desperately lonely and creepy newcomer to the school.  Billy somehow manages to navigate all this and keep sane.  The film captures the simple atmosphere of the time with some beautiful photography.  Andrew Paterson is great in the lead role and Jay Collins as Roy is spooky, a good combination of acting and keen direction of young actors.  In conclusion, the film won’t win any awards for great originality or quality but it is a relatively decent work of its type
